salt water

sorry it's been quiet  this week. besides the fact that i have been out of town for a wedding {kj} this week,  a few other emotionally {and physically} draining events have occurred. so while i get my mind {and body} back in check here is the quote that helps me get through these times ....

*ps just realized this quote on the photo is wrong... the actual quote is
"the cure for anything is salt water. sweat , tears, or the sea."

its all in the details! we needed pencils for a baby shower i helped throw {k} so instead of just getting the typical yellow number two i ordered some sweet baby inspired ones {i wrote the "poem" part of skidamarink a dink a dink on them} and for my favorite engaged teacher {k ... cant wait until the big day next weekend!!!} i ordered pencils that said "ps.... i'm engaged."

i ordered the baby shower pencils from pencils4less. unfortunately the place i ordered the engaged pencils  from is no longer in business but here is a similar place thcarboncrusader {they also have really cute ones already customized!!! to be honest the baby shower ones were just printed on the pencil, not engraved like i had wanted, the engaged ones were actually engraved.  although the price was steeper for the engraved ones, i thought the quality was much better... but in the end both got the job done and were super sweet} chevron goody bags from sweet estelle's baking supply on etsy.

knotty

being 5'4 its hard to find bottoms that actually fit length wise and i usually end up getting stuff hemmed... however  there are certain things that  i don't like to get hemmed. sometimes i want to wear flats, sometimes heels and sometimes "jeffery-campbell-high" heels- a girl needs options... when things are hemmed- you have less options... so heres my solution- tie it up! take your skirt and add a little knot to the bottom side. it keeps your skirt from acting as the town broom plus it shows off those shoes you spent a pretty penny on.

the moment a child is born, the mother is also born.  she never existed before.  the woman existed, but the mother, never.  a mother is something absolutely new

a few weeks ago i showed you an outdoor couch that i redid {here} well....this is couch number two! i thought i took a before picture but i cannot find it anywhere so just imagine a really ugly cushion on it first! i had a few extra blankets from ever's birthday party so, instead of using a fabric i used a blanket to recover the seat {mostly because i have been obsessing over this and this. although im still looking for the perfect blanket with bold bright colors, this will do for now.}

here is the link again to my quick and easy recover tutorial

nailed it

before i had my daughter, i was getting manicures once a week {confession.... sometimes i would go in twice a week just for a color change... and hand message...  i even went and got a manicure the moment i went into labor. i figured i had a few hours to kill and it might be the last time i got one in peace and quite! albeit that manicure was a little more uncomfortable than most...} after having my daughter, i'm lucky if i get one once a month! i often find my self painting over an old polish job before going out to dinner or painting in the car on the way to an event, so i have started to accumulate the tools necessary for a semi "professional" looking manicure. a few months back my {future} sis in law { k} ordered the two of us a product called liquid palisade. its almost like a glue that blocks nail polish and makes a clean line. you can use it for everything from blocking your cuticles to making a design on your nails. i have attempted to try using this product many a times but gotten interrupted with tea parties. today we got one nail done!!! {ok i guess it is confession day... i started off doing a chevron design on all nails.... however i got impatient and didn't let it dry long enough soooooo you get one nail...} a couple things about this product. it works... but you have to have to let it dry completely and let all layers of nails polish dry completely. this cannot be rushed. so if you've got a lazy sunday at the beach or catching up on the latest girls episode go for it! also i wasnt crazy about the brush it comes with. the bristles stick out and don't make for a clean line, so after a quite a few attempts i grab and tiny paintbrush which worked perfect! but don't forget... let it dry completely!!! first i did a few layers of opi bubbles. then once completely dry, do your design of choice using liquid palisade {of course i did a little heart, oh and make sure a leave a little tab on the skin of your finger somewhere to grab, like i did at the bottom of my cuticle,  it makes it easier to peel off. } once that is dry fill in or paint with second color {essie geranium}. then, once that is dry peel off! voila! or as my sis in law says... viola! haha   you k

ps apparently i'm not ambidextrous... so this is what my nails look like right now...  k come over and help me xo
ps i think this would be super cute for a wedding....

{vegan} creamy white bean soup

Thursday, May 3, 2012

i served this soup at ever's birthday party in place of baked beans {we had a campout theme incase you missed it...} needless to say it was a hit! ever since the party i have gotten an e-mail or text everyday from someone asking for this recipe sooooo girlies- here is it... now leave me alone! xo

{vegan} creamy white bean soup

1 tablespoon olive oil
2 scallions {minced}
3 garlic cloves {minced}
4 cups white cannellini beans
8 cups water
4-5 celery ribs {chopped}
1/2 cup white wine
1 bay leaf
salt and pepper
a few springs of fresh rosemary
1 head of cauliflower
in a soup pot, heat a tablespoon of olive over medium heat. add garlic and scallions, cook until garlic is golden brown and scallions are soft. once thats ready add 6 cups of water, beans, bay leaf, celery, salt and pepper. while that is all melding together, in a separate pot steam the cauliflower with 2 cups of water. once it is done steaming {literally falling apart, can completely stick a fork easily through} blend the cauliflower and water in a blender until completely pureed. set aside. now back to the other pot... once the beans have cooked for about 15 minutes {or once the celery is soft} add the white wine. cook another 10 minutes or so. now you can add the cauliflower puree. add as much or as little as you like. of course you can completely skip if your not into the little white tree but it adds a great unexpected creaminess without all the unneeded aspects of heavy cream. add a few springs of chopped rosemary. this soup is very forgiving so don't worry if you don't follow the directions exactly, taste as you go along don't be afraid to play around with it!

mommy dearest
here are some of my favorite picks for mothers day... SOME. there is just so much great stuff out there right now! i hate to sound cliche buuuut anything to help her relax is a great gift... being a mom myself, any chance i get to just sit by myself and just zone out is an cherished moment. so if you could bundle all this up and leave her alone for a few hours that would be uuuhmazing! if not grab a thing or two off this list, wrap it up tight, make her some breakfast and don't forget to add a homemade gift {thats secretly our favorite part....} oh and don't forget to tell her how wonderful she is....
rebecca minkoff leather zipper wallet
anthropologie hair ties
catbird alphabet and heart rings
essential faith fragrance
rosebud lip salve
live love pillow
pyrite heart
capri blue etched jar candle
"i love my mommy" mother's day design on iPhone 4
my mom's story book
tayrona hammock
call your mother plaque
my even more wonderful world of fashion
glass perfume bottle
fifty shades of grey

if you need a homemade gift idea let me give little suggestion... as mothers we all have our charlotte york moments, where we lock ourselves in the pantry overwhelmed and cry.  write down things you love about your mother, memories that will make her laugh, and things to make her smile. put them all in a jar. tape a big heart to it. tell her to put it in the pantry. when she locks her self in there on the edge of tears she'll open it....
